How does one clean a Leather Jacket ?

Question:I like leather clothing, but I hear they are high maintenance, so I stayed away from them. Recently, a friend gave me an used leather jacket I would like to keep. I must clean it. I do not talk here only about maintenance for the leather, but also to get rid of whatever sweat and storage odor may be present. Dry cleaners ask for a lot to clean a leather jacket, and I would like to learn to do it myself. This jacket may be my first leather item, but will not be the last. I hear leather items can be cleaned at home. Can somebody tell me how to clean and maintain this leather jacket, as well as other clothing items?

Answers:
You need to use a good quality water based foam leather cleaner. Strong cleaner or Maxi Cleaner if it is very dirty.

DO NOT use anything containing oils, waxes or silicones. (Most 'conditioners' contain waxes or oils) and furniture polish contains silicones

BABY WIPES are the worst thing you can use as they will destroy the finish on your leather. They are very strong alkiline cleaners to neutralise urine (acid) on babys skin so they are not the right thing to use on leather.

Saddle soap is too harsh to use on a leather jacket.

A lot of leather wipes contain chemicals which will also destroy the finish or leave residues on the leather which will damage it.

Fairy liquid contains more salt these days to get dishes clean and this will break the finish down on your leather. This has been verified by the manufacturers (as with the baby wipes).

You should also follow cleaning with a good water based leather protector which will act like a 'scotchgard' and inhibit dirt and stains from being absorbed and make cleaning easier the next time.

Dry leather needs rehydrating with water and oils and waxes should not be used as the natural oils do not dry out of leather. Wiping over with a damp cloth regularly will help to do this.

It is important to maintain a regular cleaning regime cleaning dirt off the surface regularly and inhibiting the absorption of body oils into the leather with a protector is the best way of doing this.

The alternative is a brand new product on the market called Lazy Leather. This is the latest technology in cleaning and combines an effective cleaner with a protector. It is quick and easy to use and should be used as a maintenance product once your suite has been cleaned or from new if you have just bought it.

hi go to walmart or kmart or even a shoe repair shop and get a leather cleaner i forget the name but its with the shoe polishes and doenst cost much..i've used this on a bag and worked well you just wipe it on and off..the inside of the jacket though if it is material just spray it with yur cologne or even some frebreeze..if you give up just give it to the cleaners to do--i know it costs more but at least they are professional about and it will look new too..good luck..
There are leather cleaning products on the market. If you can use them for shoes, purses, etc, why not a jacket? For myself though, I'd spend the $ and send it to a professional leather cleaner.
You use "saddle soap"
To get rid of the sweat odor from the jacket you are going to have to have it drycleaned. You can clean the surface at home, but don't you want it to be really clean for yourself since someone else has been wearing it.
You can buy a leather coat cleaner in most department stores. Follow the directions on the can & use a clean, soft cloth. (terry cloth is best) (Wal*Mart, K Mart, etc.) The cleaner works great on leather jackets, but I'm not sure about eliminating the body odor or storage odor. Spray the lining of the jacket with Febreeze that says "fabric" on the can. It eliminates many clothing odors or other fabric odors.
At wal mart in the cleaning ails they have leather cleaning products or you can take it in to have it professionally cleaned at a leather cleaners.
you can go to kmart,or walmart and find a shoe polish I don't remeber the name but I use it on a leather jacket once and It worked
