Cleaning product/ solution for brick fireplace?

Question:I was watching "How clean is your house" the other week and it was in the U.S. They were cleaning a brick fireplace but I cant remember what Kim said she was using. It worked really well and would like to clean mine up the same way. Anyone see it or know please?

You can always purchase special cleaners from fireplace dealers. However, homemade cleaners seem to work just as well and will cost you a few dollars less!

Here's one system that works well:

Make sure the fireplace is cooled off.
Spread protective sheets around the fireplace.
Put on some rubber gloves and goggles.
Mix 1 cup of TSP (Trisodium phosphate, available at any home improvement store) in a gallon of warm water.
Moisten the bricks with water from a spray bottle and use a stiff brush to scrub in the TSP solution.
Rinse by sponging with clear water.
Here's another option:

Mix one quart of hot water with a ½ cup of yellow laundry soap, such as Fels Naphta.
After the mixture has completely cooled, add a pound of pumice powder and a ½ cup of ammonia.
Mix thoroughly.
Using a paintbrush, apply a thick coating of the mixture to the bricks.
After 30 minutes, scrub off the coating with a stiff brush and warm water, then rinse.
After your bricks are clean, pick up a masonry sealer and apply it to the bricks. The masonry sealer will make the bricks a lot easier to clean the next time.
