Good organization tips?

Question:my daughter had the smallest room in the house. she is also the youngest and she got all the hand-me downs and some of her own stuff too. now, she's 13 and still has all the what she calls "crap." she doesn't want it and her brothers and sister don't want it but her siblings(okay, me too)tell her NOT to get rid of it. i'm finally giving in and getting rid of...some of it but all the stuff still needs a place to go. so, other than putting it all in the attic, are there any ways to just make it look nicer(in her small closet) that's all she really wants, organization. please give her some tips

I would first start by eliminating everything you can do without and donating it to charity. This will ease your mind that it isn't going to waste, give you tax credit, and remove a lot of the clutter that you don't want to throw out.

As for maximizing space you should visit a bed, bath & beyond or similar store that has a lot of organizational add-ons that can fit in convenient places. Something like a shoe rack that hangs on the inside of a closet door, stackable plastic boxes, etc. Also consider installing some shelving in her room to better utilize the cubage of the room.

Also, have you heard of "5S"? It is an organizational system original developed by japanese manufacturing to instill a culture of neat and orderly organization in facilities. The principles however are universal and most people (such as myself) that have gone through a 5S implementation at their company usually bring the principles into their home once they internalize them.

You can read up on the 5S principles on wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5s...

The basic mnemonic structure of 5S is:

Sort -
Set in Order -
Shine -
Standardize -
Sustain -

try vacumnn bags i

heard it works. also storage bins.p.s. enlarge closet
Well, first sort by priority. That means, making piles of stuff. Stuff that is basically trash to throw, stuff that is to donate, like still good but too small clothing, etc. Then stuff that she wants to keep, but never or hardly ever uses, and then stuff she uses all the time. Once you've done that, throw and donate everything in those piles, and you'll see how little is left. Then I suggest getting a few sturdy plastic boxes for all that sentimental stuff, and packing it in there. Label it so she knows what it is, and put it in the back corner of the closet. Then take all the stuff she uses regularly and sort it. I sort my clothes by type, skirts and dresses on one side, pants in the middle, shirts and blouses on the other side. I use a lot of hangers that you can hang multiple things on, so it takes less space. Then I have a shoe rack on the floor, but you can also get the kind that goes over the closet door, if that works. Or else, get some shoe boxes and stick them in there, with the label, so you know what is in there. Shoe boxes also work well for things like hair accessories and belts and other smaller things that easily get lost. I don't know how her closet is laid out or what, but that's the gist of it. Just make sure everything she keeps is in its place, and labeled so she knows where it will go in the future. You can find a lot of stuff for cheap organization, at places like the Family Dollar and stuff. If not there, then Target or WalMart should have stuff too. The hardest part is, once it's organized, to keep it that way. Good luck.
I can suggest this to your daughter,3 boxes. 1 I love and really want to keep.2 I have no use for this, it´s still in good condition and might be good for someone else to use. so I will give this to the local charity shop. 3 This is of no use to anyone, so I will throw it away. We all keep thing´s for years , some of which get so badly stained, then they are no good for you or to give away. Best having a good clean out , after all, Christmas will be on our door steps before we know it. and you will need more space
