Fed up w/ my hardwood floors!!?
Question:I tried Murphey's...tried Pledge orange.the floors don't shine!! HELP!
Answers:
My husband and I have a hardwood flooring business. If your floors don't shine it's because they aren't supposed to or they are real old. There are different finishes on floors. Some shiny some not. It sounds like your floors are supposed to shine. Sorry. But I wouldn't waste ur money on any more of those products.
Maybe you have worn the finish off, using a lamb's wool product you can apply a coat or 2 or poly, scuffing up the surface will be necessary prior to doing this
Wood Floor Maintenance
Most wood floors can be kept clean by first sweeping or vacuuming with a floor nozzle to remove most of the surface dust and dirt, then damp mopping with clear water (dip a sponge in clear water, squeezing it out so that the mop is barely damp, almost dry). Use very little water and rinse your mop thoroughly after each use since excess water can dissolve protective coatings, alter the color of the wood and raise the grain to roughen the surface.
If your floors are not dirty enough to need mopping every week, then you should not do it, as it will wear the floors faster, not to mention waste your time. Simply sweeping is often all they need.
If need to restore the shine to your wood floor after you get it clean, try damp mopping it with 1/2 cup vinegar and 2 tablespoons furniture polish in a gallon of warm water. Vinegar is also useful for removing any soap residue or build-up, but should not be necessary every week.
Good Luck! =)
We have old hardwood floors at my house, also.
What has really worked the best for us is using mineral oil. It really works! It will make your floors shine.
You have to apply it to a clean floor. It works best if you apply it by hand with a dry cloth. You can buy it at most grocery stores.
Good luck!
It may be that your floors need to be deep moisturized, mineral spirits as mentioned above or Scott's Liquid Gold will accomplish that. However, if you think it is that the finish has become dull, get a container of Howard's Restore a Finish. You can easily apply it with a sponge mop and them buff it with the same mop covered with a lint free soft cloth. It comes in several wood tones to match the finish or you can buy it in clear. It really does leave a wonderful shine.
orange glow flat mop kit, Use the spray cleaner not the wax cleaner in the squeeze bottle.
They probably need refinished or a new coat of polyurethane.
Hey, I grew up in a hardwood flooring company. My uncle owns it and I 've worked for him on and off. Any kind of flooring you put down will shine depending on the finishing.
If this is older flooring, there is no way you can "shine it up". I guarantee you this. If this is newer flooring (within 5-10 years) then it's rather easy. But not cheap!
You will need to rent a sander, which could run $50 a day depending on your hardware store. After sanding, you need to apply High Gloss if you want it to shine. Water based products are recommended (not oil based [polyurethane]) The water based will be stronger and hold up longer.
If you've had the floor for a while, don't use those products like Pledge. You already have excess color that has sunken into your wood. The only way to get it out and "shine" is to sand it out and refinish the whole thing.
PS Wood floors are hard to keep looking good. They will be nice for the first 10 years, but after that, you will spend a load of money to keep them looking that way. Depending on how old your floor is, I would guess $300 to refurbish now and again every 3-4 years.
I would got to home depot, ace hardware, Lowes and ask them what to do. You may need to sand them down and refinish them.
