I find that using the oxy carpet cleaning solution in one of the small carpet cleaners (the ones you can buy for home use) works wonders for that.
well it depends on what kind of fibers the carpet has (like old wool carptes vs synthetic fibers)
and it depends on what type of stain
I would call out a professional carpet cleaner like Coit or stanley steamer sometimes they have deals..then after they clean them buy some clear plastic or this clear tape they use for high traffic areas and put it on the carpet where it tends to get spills or dirty..good luck..
For the stains, treat them with a carpet cleaner (resolve is what I have used for years) , but then put a towel down over it, and then place a heavy object on it (like books or something) this will help the stain come out of the padding under the carpet, and that will make it less likely to come back.
Use Spot Shot. I have used it on my moms 10 year old stains and they came out!!
Tomato-based stains are very difficult to remove. My Mother-in-law recently told me that (the company) ChemDry removed a ton of stains in her late mother-in-law's carpet.
You could first start with Spot Shot, if that doesn't work, go to a carpet store and look for a product called Tech. It's about $15 a bottle, but removed black printer ink from my apartment carpet a few years ago.
Failing that, call ChemDry or Stanley Steemer.
