I want to clean the windows of our basement apartment, and am wondering about the best way to do the screens.?

Question:Because we are in the basement, the windows are relatively easy to access, but they have obviously not been cleaned in a very long time. The glass will be fussy, but I will get it done with a little elbow grease. However, I am concerned about the screens. We rent, so I have to be careful with them, but I'm afraid a vacuum isn't going to be enough to clean them thoroughly. We don't have a garden hose to spray them down with, either. Any suggestions? Answers from people who have first hand experience would be especially appreciated!! Thanks!

Answers:
take them inside and clean them in the shower.. you can scrub them in there with some cleaner and water..

hose them off and wipe them down w/ a wet rag and soapy water.
use a bucket of water, some soap, and a soft scrub brush

i like the brushes you can buy for doing the wheels on your car , they have a nice long handle and the bristles hold water well

You really need the water pressure. You should be able to buy a cheap hose and spray attachment for $10-$20. It will come in handy for other tasks, too. Otherwise, you could put them in the tub and scrub with as stiff a brush as the screens can handle, using a strong grease cutting detergent and water.
I cannot say I have first hand experience, but somehow this idea just came to mind:

You'll need a sponge, spray bottle, household vinegar and scrub brush (the kind used to scrub your carpet, like a big toothbrush).

Fill your spray bottle with warm water and a little vinegar. Spray your screens and then use the scrub brush and go back and forth to clean your screens (this should get out any stuck dirt or cobwebs). Then, spray with more vinegar/water mixture, and use your moistened sponge to wipe clean. Your sponge will probably get very dirty, so bring a small bucket of water to rinse it out between cleanings.

Good luck!
This is what I do...
First:
Clean your inside facing glass of your windows with glass cleaner wipe dry and clean with paper towels.

Second:
Go outside spray the outside facing screens of your windows and wipe dry and clean with a Towel (old bath towel not paper towels they will just rip).

Third:
Go back inside and open window to spray and clean the inside facing screen and dry with Towel.

Forth:
Spray the outward facing window and clean and dry with paper towel.
Brush off the dirt and dust from the screens with a stiff bristle brush. I do this every year when I swap the storm windows for screens each summer and it works great. Then just use soap and water around the frame. Less hassle and mess.
