My house smells! I can't find the source. Any ideas?
Question:I can't stand the spray air fresheners -- then it will just smell like the bad smell plus fruit or something.
Answers:
First remove the offending source of the odor then put out a small bowl of undiluted White Vinegar in the offending room over night, then remove the bowl of vinegar in the morning if odor has dissipated, then spray a fine mist of White Vinegar around your home this should remove the odor, if this does not work to your satisfaction then I can suggest another odor destroyer, Use quarter cup of Fabric softner to half cup of warm water in a spray bottle, spray in the air and on your furniture, curtains, drapes etc, this is a version of Fabreeze brand, but you must go through your home and find the offending item that is causing the odor, nothing will work if you do not remove it. Good Luck !
MOVE!
Dead mouse where you can`t find it.
Need a bit more info, but Febreeze works pretty good for most smells and doesn't choke you. Usually when I have this problem, I send my husband out of the house for a couple hours and it clears right up! :-)
Find and remove that plate of old food that one of your kids left under the bed. Take out the garbage.
Seriously though, try Febreeze. It works without all the cover up of the regular air fresheners. Good Luck
Invite your neighbor's dog over and follow it around.
you could try washing with vinegar solutionit will smell like the vinegar for a bit but will go away. then set out bowls of it in a corner, or use amonia. cover your nose till you get done and let it air out, move everything and see if it is coming from under your fridge, good luck
Put 2 qts water +1 cup vinegar on stove. Bring to a boil, turn down & let simmer till water is almost gone. That should refesh your house. Vinegar kills germs and dispels odors. You can also pop some popcorn in the microwave. Another: Put 1/2 teasp. vanilla or a vanilla bean in a baking dish with water and bake at 425* till it starts boiling, turn down to 300* degrees & let it simmer. GL!
Vinegar will kill smells but not germs. I agree with some of the answers it could be a dead mouse or critter or food that got spilled in your house you need to fine the source of the smell in order to get rid of the smell. Like one suggestion make your own deodorizers.
It's most likely your carpet. If something was spilled, the foam under the carpet could be molded.
