Does chlorine bleach mixed with water emit poisonous fumes?
Question:I mix bleach and water and let it sit to clean my ceramic kitchen sink. Works well, but I worry about fumes.
Answers:
Unless you are pouring a gallon over your head and sitting in it for the remainder of the day, you have nothing to worry about.
State health inspections revolve around the use of bleach in NUMEROUS institutions for sanitizing and good hygiene practices.
Please continue to clean your sink and MANY other places in your home with bleach diluted in water. You only need about a tablespoon per gallon of water but I always use a 1/4 cup for I REALLY want to sanitize things. WOW and I have lived to tell about it ! Beware of those telling you that this minimal amount used for cleaning is dangerous, they obviously have no clue about State Health Inspection Guidelines.
: )
Happy Cleaning !
No, bleach and water have no dangerous fumes, it's when you mix bleach with ammonia, you could die.
Chlorine gas irritates your nose and eyes. Use it in a weak solution in a well-ventilated place.
No. Bleach and ammonia mixed cause the dangerous vapors. When you mix the water it dilutes it and makes it less abrasive. You will be fine. I clean with bleach and water all the time.
You are diluting the bleach, so there is no problem.
The combination of bleach and ammonia creates noxious fumes, and should NEVER be done.
you should not have any problems if you use a 1/2 cup bleach to a sink full of water, but yes chlorine does evaporate quicker than water. If you are worried turn on vent fan above stove or open a window or door, or just use Soft-Scrub.
Bleach and water will not emit any noxious fumes other than from the bleach itself, however, be careful not to mix bleach with anything other than water, chlorine gas will form and that is deadly.
Enjoy your day.
No it isn't poisonous, however it can cause allergic reactions such as rashes, asthma like symptoms and if you are very sensitive to it you can pass out. Never mix it with ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, sparkling water, or any carbonated beverage.
NO. The bleach is already diluted somewhat for the commercial market with water anyway.
It is AMMONIA you never want to mix with bleach. NEVER.
There is always a bit of bleach smell when you use bleach so you should not use it in a small confined area like a bathroom with the door closed. You'd get a headache from that.
This is safe to do, just dont mix anything else in it.
It certainly can. Always use it in a well ventilated area. Be sure not to use too much - a little can go a long way. You shouldn't need more than a quarter cup per 1/2 gallon of water for a stubborn cleaning job; likewise, if you are disinfecting your hand-washed dishes in the rinse water, you only need one capful per one to five gallons of water. If you are using much more for cleaning, you can buy disposable masks from someplace like Home Depot; look for the ones that are specifically designed to reduce inhaling of fumes. And don't forget your rubber gloves!
Yes--rip your lungs out and blind you. During World War I --cvhlorine gas was one of the most deadly weapons to use against the American Dough Boys and the French. Thousand were killed or wounded from chlorine. This is the same chemical that is in bleach. The same chemical that is used at the sewage water treatment plant -- where your POO goes. Chlorine will give a chemical burn that will take years to heal. Chlorine is dangerous--watered down or not. A face mask and eye protection glass should be worn when using bleach. . Wear rubbler glove4s when cleaning with bleach. Bleach is probably the most danerous house hold chemical. Be careful--Please---
It smells bad, but isn't poisonous. Now, if you mixed it with other cleaning products, in particular ammonia-based products, then you've just made mustard gas, which IS quite poisonous!
Chlorine bleach mixed with water is a good disinfectant. It does not emit chlorine gas, as some have suggested.
The fumes that you're smelling are sodium hypochlorite, NaOCl. They can be a little irritating for some people, but if it's not very strong, you should be fine. In other words, you're not smelling chlorine gas, you're smelling bleach.
If you mixed it with ammonia, or some other base, you could liberate chlorine gas which is deadly (this is why you're told not to mix ammonia and bleach.). Chlorine gas is heavy (so you'd want to walk, not crawl, if exposed to it) and if there's enough of it, you'd see a greenish color also.
ummm...I think the questions been answered (i.e. nothing to worry about)
In fact, I actually like the smell..
