I'm Moving 200miles! Need help on down sizing!?
Question:Moving out of home and into a 3bed house with my boyf, need to take my furniture just how much other junk shall i get rid of? Baring in mind i'm a hoarder and find it hard to chuck stuff out especially clothes! Help!
Answers:
The general rule is, if you haven't used it in 6 months to get rid of it. I would stick by that. It is hard at times, but you can do it.
The only way is to be ruthless.. maybe get a friend to help.. they'll find it easier to get rid of junk that you think you might 'need', and plus.. a new house means you're going to want new stuff to go in it, out with the old and in with the new! good luck
We have the same problem but moving abroad. I am dreading the deadline coming. I suppose it will mean gritting our teeth and letting go, everything seems precious. But if it's been on a hanger or in a cupboard for more than a year it will have to go to the charity shop along with furniture we have no room for. At least some one will benefit from it. Memories are in your head not in objects. Good luck with your move.
take what is absolutely neccessary - dishes, silverware, etc.you know, the basics.
If you love it, keep it
if you don't have a use for it, put it in a moving sale and reap the rewards of extra cash to furnish the new home.
A larger new environment will be overwhelming to decorate and you'll want to use key items to pull your space together.
You don't see many nick nacks of assortment in organized environments unless it's a collection - keep the new home simple.
You'll need to work with your bf's furnishings too so work from that angle as well.
Craigslist.com is a free classified site you can use to get rid of stuff as well and is set up in many states and cities.
Sort with your bf helping you to see if anything you want, he may want too.
that's a start for compromise.
I used to be a hoarder also. You just have to realize that you do not need 90% of what you have to live on. Take the absolute minimum. Remember you are paying to ship it, so you might as well buy new when you get there.
Take your items to a womens shelter, you will feel really good giving away your stuff to people that do not have anything. Let someone else enjoy your items instead of just "hoarding" them for no reason.
Don't read anything you haven't seen for a few weeks (magazines etc), just bin it. OK, I'l start again. Only take your photo's, furniture, bestest dishes, clothes, pets, anything that is essential. Leave anything that doesn't really mean anything and that you CAN do without. Take it car boot.
I wish you every happiness. get over the hoarding lark though, it's a pain and can make your home appear a lot smaller.
