I just moved into my apartment and now I have fleas in my carpet and I have no pets. Where did they come from.

I suspect they were left behind by the former tenant. You should immediately contact your landlord and inform him/her of the problem. Try not to unpack too much stuff if you can. This way, perhaps you can have the landlord send an exterminator to deal with the problem as soon as possible. It wouldn't hurt to call an exterminator just to ask about this to see if you can get any free information -- also try searching the subject on the internet. You may find a solution there! Hope these suggestions help.
The previous occupants of your apartment probably had pets. Fleas lay their eggs in carpets, cracks in the floorboards etc. Their larvae then spend all their time crawling about the carpet. Only about 5% of the fleas adult life is spent living on the animal. If the problem is severe you can get a flea bomb. This is placed in your property, ensuring that all internal doors are open, and activated treating your whole house. You may not return to your property for 5 to 6 hours. (personally I think if you have no animals and can be away from your property for 5 or 6 hours, this is your best bet.)
First, send them the previous neighbors and your landlord a lovely thank you note. They 'left' the fleas (and eggs) for you. Then, since you don't have pets, the fleas will attack you and it will be horrible!
A simple treatment is to sprinkle some borax all over the carpet, brush it in, and let it set for a while. Then vacuum it up, and it should get rid of the fleas.
It's not as lethal or as inconvenient as a bug bomb, and is supposed to work by messing up the life cycle of the flea. I do know that it's worked for me.
You might need to repeat it in a month or two if they come back. But I think one treatment should be enough
The eggs would have been lying dormant in the carpet until there was movement..(you walking around) then the eggs have hatched and now the little critters are looking for food (you)..In Australia we have a product called "flea bomb" you place them in your home and pull a tab which releases the fumes...you need to leave the premises for a few hours so that it does the job...this will kill the fleas/ants/spiders and most other creepy crawlies for a few months at least...since you dont have any pets then you shouldnt need to do this again...
Good Luck..
But I too would be contacting the real estate agent to let them know...
They most likely came in on you, fleas don't discriminate and here is how to kill them, just sprinkle borax around and they will dry up and die, but you also have to treat your furniture this can be done with either treatment borax or baking soda will dry them up then the next day you have to vacuum thoroughly both your carpets and furniture in order to fully elleviate them in other words leave no stone unturned with fleas, you can also set out a bowl or some pan filled with water and add two tablespoons of dishwashing detergent to the water put on floor and add a light over the top of the pan overnight, the fleas will jump in because they are attracted by the light and drown if you do all these treatments then your fleas will be all gone and you must wash your clothes that you have worn outside and in your home in the hottest water they can handle in order to rid the fleas in your clothes
Good Luck !
