Just follow my simple steps..
Steps
1. Get ahold of any normal dry erase marker.
2. On the surface you want cleaned, test the dry erase marker on an inconspicuous area to see if it wipes off cleanly. (But only after 5 or so seconds so that the ink can dry)
3. Once that is done, draw over the entire dried sharpie mark with the dry erase marker. Give it 5+ seconds for the marker to dry completely, otherwise it will smear.
4. Then simply wipe both marks away with an old rag or paper towel.
5. If the mark has been dried on for several days, repeat steps 3 and 4 more than once and perhaps with more pressure to wipe it off.
Tips
* You could also try plain hand sanitizer such as germ-ex - not the creamy hand lotion types. Simply squirt it on, let it sit for a few seconds, and wipe it off.
* Another useful alternative is Lysol(R) disinfectant spray. Spray a liberal amount on the marker, allow to set for a few seconds and wipe clean. Repeat if necessary to remove any remaining marks.
* Another useful alternative is rubbing alcohol. Get a bottle of rubbing alcohol (~70% Isopropanol), apply it to a paper towel, tissue, etc. and wipe. May take a few tries, depending on how long the permanent marker has been there.
* One other thing that works is a simple eraser. Use a pencil eraser to rub off most of the marker and then use rubbing alcohol to scrub away the rest with a rag or paper towel.
* Nail polish remover also gets it off, but it might damage your surface.
Warnings
* Do not attempt on porous surfaces including non finished or lightly finished wood, any fabric, unpolished stone, paper, plaster walls, leather, unfinished ceramics, rough paint, etc. etc.
* Do not leave the dry erase marker on the surface for an extended period of time, otherwise that might stain too!
Hope it helps.Good Luck!!

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
Get a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. You'll be rubbing for a while but it should come off.
The best thing I found when a friend of mine had a similar problem, she drew all over her bedroom door and frame, her parents were livid... was the white version of Ivory dish soap and as hot of water as you can stand. Try mixing them in a small spray bottle and spraying the marker then wiping. You may also try the other suggestion of the Mr.Clean wipe, I've never used it for that purpose, but it took green hair dye off my bathroom counter when my husband spilt it.
go over it with a dry erase marker and wipe it off
toothpaste :D
nail polish remover.
I know this sounds crazy but I discovered hand sanitizer. I clean offices and I did not have Wd40 or anything else so I used some hand sanitizer and it really worked. It was some kind of ink from stamps and that ink is hard to get off. Give it a try it may take a couple of times.
The only other thing you could do is go to the janitor for suggestions.
Well, whatever you do, do not use Mr Clean Magic Markers. They simply are a waste of money, and don't do the job correctly. A lot of elbow grease, a dry erase marker, some water to get rid of the streaks, and a rough cloth will work though. First you wash the area with water, then you rub the dry erase marker over the permanant version. You wait for it to dry, then rub it off with the cloth, and get rid of any possible streaks with water. Another suggestion? You might be there a while if your metal is supposedly stain resistant, so enlist some friends. The stain resistant metals are way harder to get stains off of, ironically.
paint it all over
