How can I clean my grill rack without harmful chemicals, or the dangerous metal bristle brush?

Question:What can I use to scrub my grill clean? I don't want all those chemical cleaners in my food, and those bristles come off, stick to the grill, get in food, and puncture organs! What can I do to clean safely?

Answers:
If your grill brush is falling apart, you need to get a new one. If you have a self-cleaning oven, put the rack in the oven and run the self-cleaning cycle. If you don't have the self-cleaning feature and you're still paranoid about metal bristles, use a Scotch-Brite pad and a lot of non-toxic elbow grease.

I'm not sure how you can do it the first time, but once the grill is clean you can keep it clean by wiping with a cloth when warm and coating the grill with vegetable oil so nothing sticks to it when cooking.

My way isn't chemical free but it is easy! If you take a black trash bag, a cup of ammonia and some hot water- Put the hot water and ammonia in the trash bag out side. Then put the metal parts of your grill in the trash bag and tie it closed. You leave it out in the sun and forget about it for a day or two. It will come out clean without any scrubbing.
This works for oven racks. You can try this with your grill rack. Place them in the bathtub. Fill the tub with hot water untill the racks are covered. Pour automatic dishwasher detergent over the racks. Use a cloth to swish the water around, since the water will be too hot for your hands.

After the racks have soaked a while, the burned-on matter will wipe right off. (If it is very thick you may have to scrape it off with a knife.) Then you rise all the soap off with water. If you use continue to use this method, the racks should clean more easily each time.
Put the grill rack in a plastic trash bag with some vinegar.
Leave it over night; like you were marinating it, make sure there is enough vinegar to cover both sides of the grill rack. Then scrub the grill with a baking soda
paste, and a sponge with a plastic scrubby side. I'd wear gloves. Then hose it off very thoroughly.
The amonia in the trash bag works amazingly well - however, if you don't have time - put them in the bathtub with VERY HOT water and add lots of OXYCLEAN to the tub - this will bubble off the baked on gunk within an hour. This also works well for burnt on food in pots and pans.
My hubby and other family members have a way to clean it.get the grill fired up.Once hot, take a large onion and slice it in half.Rub it across the rack til it is clean. The smell is nice and all the crud comes right off.Use a long fork to hold the onion so you don't get burned. Then take the onion and throw it on the coals when you are done.it is a tried and true at my BBQs.
The onion trick works well for me... no mess to clean up afterwards.
