Is it REALLY necessary to separate darks from brights when doing laundry?

Question:I think it's b.s. Just a way to use more detergent. I'll separate whites and colors, but that's about it. much to my wife's consternation.

Answers:
I'm with you. Separate the whites, yes, but I've never in my life made a distinction laundry-wise between brights and darks -- with one exception: REDS. I wash red things in a load all by themselves, because you really can't trust the red dyes. But back in the day, we separated white clothes from colors, period. I never got the "bright" thing. As long as it's all washed in cold water, you're fine.

yes unless u want a pile of crap
Depends on if your color clothing have been washed a number of times. New pair of blue jeans will get your white socks light blue. After about 4-5 washes, they won't do a thing.
I keep dark and light cloths together, I just wash them on warm. If you just brought like dark jeans or dark shirts, wash them on cold because the dye could mixe into the lighter cloths(I hate that). But other than that, warm works for both dark and light cloths.

Yes you should seperate the darks from the brights and the whites because it makes the original color of the clothes last longer. If you wash them together, your clothes will eventually have a dingy look to them. Trust me, I've seen it before. I used to wash all my whites seperately and they stayed really white until I started getting lazy and washing them with the light colored clothes. They weren't as bright white anymore. It was more of a dull white.
I think it really only depends on the fabric. Some of my dark pants like to collect fuzz in the wash, so I can't wash then with towels or socks. Or if you have a new sweatshirt that might get black dye on a good shirt. No, if it all turns out ok, that's your proof that separation is over-rated where laundry is concerned.
I never do it, only if u buy like a new red sweater. than wash it separate a couple times fist beside that yeah I
never separate and they look fine.
Wanna buy some olive colored T shirts?
.It really is necessary, or your whites will start looking dingy. I know, I know, what a pain!
I have never seperated my whites and darks in my entire life. Never had a problem. I don't think modern clothing dye runs like it used to.
the dark dye in the cloths will dull your brights..
YES!
If ur washing old dark clothes (clothes that have been washed several times) with whites NO. New dark clothes will have a tendancy to bleed (color washes out) and will stain your whites.
This goes for reds also.
Sure is, unless you like the color pink.
Well mostly, its a good idea because some darker colors may bleed onto lighter colors. I have turned a load of whites pink before. But most clothes, once washes a bunch have faded all they are going to. I separate, but sometimes if I have only one laod of mixed things, I was them together and have no problems.
Nonsense.

I never seperate and I don't use bleach, been doing laundry for 20+ years, everything gets washed in warm, rinsed in cold.

Who cares if my socks aren't their 'brightest', no one is looking at my socks.
