My husband has been a dishwasher engineer for 20 years & this is a complete no no. It can damage the inside of the dishwasher the same way as putting no salt in at all.

the salt in the dishwasher is an abrasive which does most of the cleaning, you might be able to add a softener with the salt but not instead of!!
are you washing clothes or cooking in it?
I wouldn't do it if I were you.
