How can I get oil out of my garage floor (cement)?
Question:I have a lot of oil stains on the garage floor (1-7 months old) and I tried a few cleaners and pressure washing but no luck. Any ideas? This is motor oil and some small anti freeze stains.
Answers:
try putting sand down and leave it for a few day's in will soak up the oil.it works better if the sand is very dry.
I used oven cleaner and it got out the stains. Just spray the oven cleaner on, then rinse it off with the hose. It also works on the driveway.
Scrub with some Dawn dish liquid...=)
Cover it with kitty litter, then soak the kitty litter with acetone. The acetone will force the oil to the surface and the kitty litter will absorb it. Acetone is highly flammable so make sure the if you have a water heater in the garage be sure that the pilot light is out until the acetone evaporates. Follow up with a good concrete cleaner.
get a bag of "floor dry" at a part's store
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderate
Steps
1Step OnePour cola on the oily or dry stained areas, and leave the cola on overnight. Squirt a generous amount of dishwashing liquid into a bucket until you have a good lather. Rinse with the soapy water, then with a garden hose.
2Step TwoSprinkle baking soda or an absorbent powder such as cornmeal or sawdust on the oily spots. If the stain is dry, wet it first to make a scouring paste. Scrub with a stiff brush or push broom.
3Step ThreeSprinkle automatic dishwasher detergent on the oily concrete. Leave it for several minutes, then pour boiling water on the stained area. Scrub with a stiff brush or push broom, then rinse.
4Step FourTry a commercial concrete cleaner such as Garage and Driveway Cleaner by Red Devil Co. or a grease solvent such as Benzine. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
5Step FiveSprinkle trisodium phosphate (TSP) on the oily concrete. If the stain is dry, wet it first. Let it stand for 30 minutes. Scrub using a stiff broom. TSP is a dangerous product; if you must use it, wear rubber or latex gloves, safety goggles and protective clothing. Also, never wash a TSP product down storm drains.
6Step SixAs a last resort, combat tough spills with muriatic acid and a pressure washer. Apply the acid following the manufacturer's directions, and let it soak for several seconds. Follow with a pressure washer set at 2,500 to 3,000 lbs. per square inch (psi), or 176 to 211 kg per square cm. Like TSP, muriatic acid is a dangerous product; likewise, if you must use it, wear rubber or latex gloves, safety goggles and protective clothing, and never wash such a product down storm drains.
7Step SevenAfter trying any of the strategies above, sprinkle baking soda over the cleaned area to neutralize the solution you've used.
Try pure bleach. If that doesn't work, use Oxy Clean.
If your concrete was not sealed, you will not get rid of the stains, but you may be able to lighten them by using dilute muriatic acid. Be sure to dilute or you will etch the concrete badly.
When I cleaned for the military they had us use cat litter. (Clean cat litter) It soaks up the oil. You put it on the oil and then step on it and smash it into the oil.
Powder dishwasher detergent and a wire brush. Scrub and rinse.
