There's a cleaner you can buy from the grocery store, it's a buck or two, you just apply it to a clean cloth and put the hot iron on it. The cleaner helps remove the gunk.
Put salt on your ironing bored and turn on your iron and iron the salt it work good try it
try tomato ketchup, you'll be suprised it really works (you must apply it to a cold iron)
Steam irons: Unplug the iron and allow it to cool down before cleaning. If an iron's sole plate has a nonstick finish, any adherent starch or dirt should be removed easily by wiping with a damp sponge. For an iron without a nonstick finish, clean with a mild solution of hand dish washing liquid and water. Avoid abrasives, which could scratch the sole plate. After cleaning, fill with water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, let it steam for awhile and close iron , empty the water and replace with just plain water to rinse it out. plug it in again, and iron over a old piece of cloth, to make sure all the sediment has been removed. Now take a piece of wax paper, and iron over it a few times, this will help it glide better.
what you do is get a some newspaper, than put some salt on the newspaper, get the iron and rub it across the salt.
