I usually alsosuggest the borax soaking idea, but just had a similar situation in which that didn't completely remove all of the mildew/mold. I think because we are dealing with such large items that the folds weren't fully saturated. I found a product called DampRid mold & mildew remover and protector for fabrics that did the job. You spray it directly on each spot, wait a few seconds, if it doesn't immediately disappear, agitate with a soft brush and keep re-applying until it does. (I had a few spots that were very stubborn.) Since my items were not white, bleach, lemon juice and other acidic methods that would take the color out were not an option. If you do use the borax method, soak each item separately, rather than all together and you may have better results. But, even when I tried to soak the comforter alone, the mold/mildew remained, and only the DampRid worked to salvage it. I found it in the cleaning aisle for $2.99 at the Lowes.
bleach
Try soaking it in a borate-based cleaner like Borax. Bleach will kill most of the mold plant and cause the spots to disappear but it will NOT kill the spores. A borate product is deadly to all fungi and mold is a fungus.
So use the bleach to get rid of the spots and borate to kill it.
BLEACH OR DRY CLEANING
If you can use bleach, then do so, this will help kill the Mold. But if it is color bedding, then wash in hot water with a bleach alternative detergent for colored clothing. When it comes to the rinse, add 2 cups of white vinegar, this will kill the mold, and remove any odors that were there. Make sure it is dried good, to prevent mold.
If it is ruined any way,try spraying oven cleaner on the stain and then wash in hot water. No bleach with the cleaner.it done it once on a scrub suit and it came clean, but it was white..
