In order to move forward you must keep about 1 % out of the room. I would start with a pile that you are going to keep and a pile you are going to donate. Work your way in and do not give up. I love to watch all of those organizing shows on T.V. There is a really good one on the Style channel called .. Clean House.. If you think your room is bad you should see some of these rooms on there. Admitting that there is a problem is a great start. Where do you live? I would love to come and help.. l like doing that sort of stuff.
You can buy cheap shelving units that hang on the wall to make storage places. Also can put the shelves in the closet. Buy plastic bins that fit under the bed and store stuff there. You might want to consider a yard sale too.
Do you really need any of that stuff, if you wanted to find something in there, could you? You start by deditcating some time to this project then you make 3 piles, one pile things to keep, another things to throw out and another things to sell or donate. You could make a fourth maybe keep pile if your having trouble deciding. Enlist the help of a friend to keep you on track.
First you have to sort all of the stuff into three catagories. Keep, donate or trash. Don't try to do it all at once, you'll be overwhelmed unless you enlist friends or family members. Once you sort the stuff, you have to purge. Get rid of anything you haven't used in a year, either donate, sell or garbage. Things you have to keep goes into storage files or boxes or shelves or cabinets. The most important is letting go of anything you don't use.
start with keep & throw away pile, then where & with what to store file, get some boxes, I'm sure you can store some in your closet or under the bed. Get rid of useless junk, you may want to try a yard sale & make a couple of bucks.
I know so well. I have a room like that right now. First you have to stop procrastinating. Dig in. Move everything out of the room. Have boxes or bags to label and divide what is what. Things to keep, file, clothes to hang, things to toss. Then start putting the essentials back in first and it will go easy from there. You just have to do it.
I'm a very disorganized person, too, and easily overwhelmed with a task like this. What I like to do is call a friend or two and make it into a cleaning out party. If it is mostly just "junk" and you haven't used it in a year, get rid of it. That's why it's a good idea to have trusted friends help you and give you advice about what you can keep and what should be stored. If the room has a closet, you could make it your goal to keep only things that will fit in the closet. I use rubbermaid containers to store the stuff I can't part with. Then I go through it annually to re-evaluate. Another party!
