Can I clean a Moldy Bed Skirt?

Question:I just found out the wall that my bed was up against started to grow mold. It seems to have transferred to my bed skirt as well. Is it possible to wash them with bleach, soak them in vinegar, or spray them with some form of mold killer and reuse them? or should I not risk it coming back and toss them?

Answers:
I think I'd be more concerned about what was causing the mold on the wall. It takes constant moisture for mold to grow on a wall. Check for a leak from the roof, around a window or a water pipe in the wall. If you are renting, tell your manager/landlord before the walls are too far gone.
As for the bed skirt and any other bedding, if it is washable and can be bleached, a mild solution of bleach is all you need to stop the proplem. Mold is just a fungus and can be killed with bleach. It may leave a stain that does not come out, even with bleach. Move your bed out from the wall and aim a fan or space heater at the wall to dry it. Do not leave a space heater on while you are away. You could burn the whole thing down and mildew would be a minor problem after that. The mold on the bedding will not come back once it is killed with clorine bleach. There may be a slight odor which you can kill with a fabric deodorizer. Good Luck.

Do you really want to risk it? Throw it out if it was less than $50.
Washing in hot water, bleach and detergent will get rid of it. There may be some discoloration but it should not grow back as long as you remove the source the mold came from.
Give it a good soak in an oxy nappy soaking product. Should work.
Depends what color the bed skirt is, but bleaching it will definitely kill the mold, along with hot water and detergent. Make sure you get at the wall also with some bleach or heavy cleaning detergent to kill the mold spores. You may want to try buying a dehumidifier for the room. Commonly, mold grows in dark moist areas (unless you have some leaking pipes somewhere evident by swelling of your walls). In southern states this mold growth on walls is pretty common because of the humidity. The dehumidifier should help by removing the excess moisture in the air. To help brighten and whiten the bedskirt after killing the mold, you may want to try Rit: White-Wash, you can get it from Joann's, Walmart or Walgreens. It will help brighten and get the extra stains out caused by the mold. Hope that helps!
