i think i'm ocd! haha

Answers:
Hahah. I just kinda did something similar. I have towels - dark and light, then darks like jeans and tshirts then one for darker dresses then a white wash! Oh dear!

I normally count 5 or 6. And I always put stuff in the wrong pile apparently ("Can't you tell that it's non-colourfast polycotton that has to go on a cool wash with fast spin?" - "Sorry dear, it's just a shirt to me.")

And my wife wonders why I never do the washing!
OCD.cute..
I have;
Towels, darks, whites and husbands work clothes.
You do not have to separate by texture.that's the OCD talking...ha ha ha
I try to do full loads since they are more efficient. I typically separate dark colors (black, navy); bright colors (red, yellow); whites; and maybe light colors (tan, gray) if I need to. There should also be suggestions on your washing machine lid.
Um I can start off with four but I generally have more. Whites for bleaching, dark colors always go tgether, then theres that middle blend, not quite white and not dark either. I also wash the sheets seperate and wash the towels seperate too so I dont have to worry about lint. I work in a resturant in the kicthen and always have stains and I was those seperate to, so the stains dont bleed into my other clothes. So far, thats 6 lol but my washer is huge and I do a lot of laundry at a time, and if there arent that many clothes per pile I change the wash load. and I always do the blaching last so theres not an extra bleach left in the washer... just in case =) hope this helps.
1. Jeans
2. Towels
3. Socks and underwear
4. Sheets
5. Light colors
6. Dark colors
7. Kitchen towels, dish cloths, pot holders

Have to wash socks and underwear by themselves. Can't bear the thought of having them in with the bath towels. Also am quite adament about kitchen stuff being washed separately. Hope this helps.
YOU WOULD WANT TO SEPATE HES CLOTHES. SINCE HE USES CHEMICAL. I HAVE COLOR CLOTHES AND WHITES. MY GOOD CLOTHES ARE WASHED BY THERE SELF. AND THEN I HAVE CHILDREN CLOTHES.
Usually 2 or 3 piles but I wash different items on different days.
Saturday
1 Towels (Subdivided on color)

Sunday
2 Whites (bleaching)
3 Darks
4 Bright colors

Monday
5 Yardwork cloths and dropping suits at the cleaners.
I pay attention to what the tag on the article of clothing says about water temperature. So I sort my laundry into Jeans, Whites, Towels, Cold wash and Warm wash for the darks. And I would definitely put my husbands clothes separate from the rest because of the chemicals.
Usually, it's whites, colors and darks. At times, i need to micro sort to, if there are clothes that my husband works in, such as ones with chemicals, they will go into a separate pile. I have white towels that I don't wash with whites if I'm going to use chlorine bleach, so I just put those in with white or light colored sheets. I think you are being smart by not combining your husbands work clothes with your kids clothes, as some chemicals will remain.
i just do the basic sorting

1 colors
2 darks
3 baby
4 jeans
5 dog's blanket (thats right!)
Live alone---2 darks and whites..easy not ocd here...
