Got any suggestions for gettin really heavy ciggy smoke outta an area rug?

Question:appropriately enuff my mom gave me an area rug and she smokes, so does everyone else around her, we don't smoke at my house...
febreeze only makes a "fresh" smokey sicko nasty smell.

Answers:
if you can, hang it outside over a fence or put some chairs together so you can drape it over them and leave it outside all day and night...weather permitting of course. while it is outside take a broom and smack the rug in as many places as you can get too. when you take it back in try sprinkling baking soda on the back and sweep it into the backing. leave it on there for about 1/2 hour then vacuum, turn the rug and do the same thing to the front. baking soda is a neutralizer so it should help.
have you tried spraying it with oust? maybe try that while it is outside too. i don't know if i would spray the front if it is a dark color but i would over spray the back.
good luck!

Attach it to your car antenna and drive to Kentucky.
Stop everyone from smokeing in the house, put rug in hot sun outside for a day , maybe it will air out.
There is a product called Pure Ayre that truly removes odors and does not just add another scent like febreeze. This I would do if the area rug is too large to fit into the washing machine. I have heard bounce might also work. You could roll up your rug and put it into some large garbage bags and drop in a few bounce sheets if the other 2 don't work.
Sprinkle the carpet generously with
Corn Starch (best)
or
Borax
or
Baking Soda

Make sure you have a fresh bag in your vaccuum! and check it often

Let the Corn Starch sit for a minimum of 2 hours - overnight is best. Vacuum and you will notice a remarkable difference

the "goo" attaches to the powder and it is removed from the carpet.
when I quit smoking I had to do this several times but it was worth the effort. Try to wait a few days in between applications - and always a fresh bag!
Get a steam cleaner and clean it.
