Does anyone know how to whiten/brighten old lace?
Question:The lace has yellowed on my kids christening dress, I want to whiten the lace. How can I do this without harming the dress?
Answers:
Oxyclean. It really works. Just miz some Oxyclean with water and let it sit in there.
oxyclean
With good old fashioned soap bar, soap, and plenty Sun. Saying this as I ´m sure the dress can be washed by hand. Soak your daughter´s dress in cold water , rub the soap onto the lace, Leave the soap on and free from water , say 1/2 hr. Now back to the cold water add more soap , give a gentle rub, rinse well in cold water. I suggest you wait for a nice hot sunny day to do this. Now hang outside, or if you have a nice patch of grass , lay the dress on the grass, the sun will bleach out the yellow stain´s the natural way. Every so often , sprinkle cold water over the lace parts of the dress, keep doing this and you should get results. In the old days my grandmother did this with all her white linen and lace items, I used to love helping her . AH! the good old days
If its polyester lace you may not be able to whiten it.
Is the dress at least handwashable? (Any of these tips you get I would suggest trying it on a small section before you do the whole thing. You can try this on a small section of the dress too and if not harmed soak the entire garmet)
2 cups sea salt & 1 cup vinegar to 3 gallons cool water. Soak 24 - 72 hours and rinse until water is clear.
Repeat the recipe above if any staining remains.
You might also let it dry in the sun and see if that helps as well.
Good luck!
Oxy Clean is great for doing this. Just soak for a few hours, rinse well...and dry
use dryel, the home dry cleaning kit. The stain remover should do it
