Depends on the stain. Many stains come out by using your own hair shampoo, using warm water and a sponge, rinse well, and always lay a heavy object on top of the wet area . Like this , any remaining water from the underside of your carpet will be soaked up by the the towel.
If there are pet stains, use a cleaner that contains "enzymes" (this is critically important).
For normal carpet cleaning, I suggest you buy an UPRIGHT carpet scrubber. Do not get tricked into buying a canister type. The uprights work just as good and they are easier on the back.
