What is the best way to keep the smell out of my stinky trash can?

Someone else mentioned charcoal. I found the perfect product for this that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a natural carbon product called FRIDGE IT carbon odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great and eliminates the odors and for a long time. It works so much better than baking soda all those sprays, and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. and gels and oils that say keep away from fabric, pets, etc. and just don't eliminate odors. Just hang one of these on the trash can. Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it and internet. Definitely worth trying

i put a dryer sheet under the garbage bag, and one in each garbage bag. it helps to eliminate mild odors, but not the big ones!! if the smell is "stuck" in the garbage can from time, get a few boxes of baking soda, pour them into the bottom, and seal off the top with a bag. let it sit for a couple of days. you can also try washing it with vinegar regularly.
I wash mine with bleach and use scented trash bags. Still you'll never get rid of "big" odors. Take your trash out often. Mine goes out 1-2 times a day my trash can is cleaned as often as I feel it needs to be and we dont have any odors other then our sons diapers that comes from it ;-) Ive heard of some ppl putting baking soda, carpet fresh and even dryer sheets in the bottoms of theirs whatever works for them I guess.
When I put in a new bag I sprinkle in a little bit of carpet fresh. It helps with the smell. I have two kids in diapers. Plus I wash it out with cleaning products about once a week.
put a few charcoal briquettes in the bottom of the can, they last forever and absorb odors. Just dont buy the match light kind!
If it's plastic, wash it out with bleach and water. Let it soak in your tub for a few minutes. Rinse, and dry it. Put some baking soda in the bottom of the can (sprinkle it in). Line it with plastic trash bag. That should help. What also helps, is to empty the trash can every day, or not more than every other day if possible.
Hope this helps. Take care.
