Any suggestions on keeping my window air conditioner unit from stinking? Smells weird, not too bad but?
Question:like mildew or something. I sprayed Renuzit on the filter, but that is just a temporary fix.
Answers:
Soak it in some fabric softner for a couple hours (The filter I mean)
Does the filter need cleaned or replaced?
mine smells also ,I think it may be the Freon in it!
You can get one of those vent clips that are air fresheners.
You really need to wipe out the condensation periodically as well.
Let the filter dry out and dust it heavily with baking soda, then replace it when it is completely dry.
completly clean out the inside, if its been sitting all winter it could be full of dust, mold mildew, etc.
I got one from someone where it had been in a shed for a few years, and I found a rat's nest complete with droppings in it, cleaned it out and it worked fine.
the air intake, which is the biggest area on the front, needs Lylsall sprayed into it. maybe several times, till the mold is dead
If there is no way for you to clean or change the filter that you are able to get to then I would suggest dabbing a cotton ball with some "Cooking Vanilla" & place it somewhere when the A/C is on. I know that this works in a refridgerator when you dont have baking soda so try it & see if it helps.
You have algae and bacteria growing inside. This can lead to legioneres disease and other respritory ailments. First, make sure the unit is angled to the outside slightly so that water can drain out of the unit.make sure drain holes are open and not blocked. Second, clean and disenfect the filter, replace it if you can, Then, use lysol or other dysenfectint to thoroughly clean all parts of the unit. If you need help, call a serviceman to do it. If you rent, notify the landlord and ask them to have ot cleaned and checked. Then once clean, you can buy small packets of sents that hang in front of the air duct to spread nice smell thru the house.
Is the drain clogged? It sounds like you have a mold or mildew problem. If you can get it loose, run a bleach solution through it to kill any mold. Scrub around the area with bleach in hot soapy water if you see black mold spores.
Wipe down the dust from the condenser coils and plug it back in after changing the filter and letting the air conditioner dry out completely. (I get filters from Home Depot, Filtrete or 3M, not the cheap ones)
Renuzit is just a placebo, you may have to call in the pros to get rid of the real problem.
