How can I make writing in sharpie last longer on clothes such as a signed sweatshirt?
Question:I recieved a sweatshirt signed by friends in color sharpies. I'm hesitant to put it in the wash because I am afraid the writing will come out. Is there anything I can do to make the writing set better? Like soaking it in something?
Answers:
Well, the ink in Sharpies doesn't come out with water, so don't worry too much. However, you can set the ink with heat - just throw it in the dryer for a while to heat up the ink before you wash it. I've also heard that you can rinse it with vinegar and water to help set it.
I don't have experience with the colored ones, but my husband wrote all over two old shirts with a black marker and it has faded slightly but definitely has NOT come out, even after being washed many, many times. I would assume that you probably don't have to worry too much about it.
place a towel over the signatures and iron them with a cool iron.
if you really want to keep it set get some writing paint pens at the craft store and just trace over the names. it will take some time and patience, but it will be worth it. i had a sweatshirt that 'BOB GOLIC' signed from way back in the days and i just retraced with a paint pen lasted for years.good luck
find yourself a good airbrush artist and ask them what to "seal" it with. they buy from a distributor and would know the local brands of fabric sealants that are available in your area or by mailorder
