Washing machine not spinning?
Question:I have a Hotpoint WMA9
On standard wash, starts to fill, then stops completely. I think this is about the time that the drum is supposed to start turning (after about 5-10 seconds). Machine then just sits there and does nothing.
If I set it to spin, it empties the small amount of water inside and once again just sits there. Eventually, door releases and you can remove the wet contents.
At no time does the drum spin.
Read a snippet about a blocked hose possibly being the problem. Removed the back panel, undid the large clip on the hose from the drum and cleaned the filter out (it was quite clogged). This hasn't solved the problem.
Think it might be the motor or the bushes but is there any easy way to check ?
Grateful of any ideas or things to check to eliminate etc.
Thanks
Dave

It could be the belt, if it has one or the timer.
Is this a top-loader ? Check the lid safety switch - you know, the thing that trips the spin if you open the lid. It may be a little stuck, so the machine thinks the lid is open. Though usually it wouldn't fill if this was the case.
Could be motor and/or brushes (in the motor), drive belt slipping or broken, controller defective, blocked hoses and or filter (if present). Solution get in a washing machine repairman.
I got same prob with mine at the moment (machine nearly 10 yrs old), it's hit or miss whether it will spin even with only half a load of washing. I've been told that it's the bushes and apparently they are quite easy to remove and replace...I hope so any way!
Sorry. This sounds like symptoms of a dying timer. If you let the machine go for 1/2 hour does the timer dial rotate on it's own? Best to you.;-)=
It is most likely the capacitor, this is what makes it spin. They are easy to change. But it's about 20 years ago that I changed one. And machines have changed alot since then. It's about six inches, and cylindrical. Also check belt hasn't come off. Good Luck.
it's your brushes have look what colour they are and get the same either black or white easy to change there's a clip at the bottom of the brushes use a small screw driver to lift it then pull them out make sure your mahine is turned off slide the new brushes in there could be a little clip on the brass part of the brushes lift that when they are in place to allow the brushes to make contact done
If it fills and empties, the water level sensor is probably o.k . If you feel brave enough and confident enough, slip the belt off the motor and put the machine on spin cycle then flip the motor pulley by hand, be careful as it can leave a nice friction burn mark on your finger, if it tries to start it may be worn brushes. If nothing happens it may be a sensor or the motor controller unit defective. Make sure all the spade and push in connectors are clean and tight, any green on the connections is a sign of corrosion and can cause a fault. There is no great mystery to a washing machines operating system for me, but to someone not used to them it can be a real nightmare. However if you don't try you don't know, but be very, very, wary of the mains voltage and the water, they are a lethal combination, even more so if your power supply does not have an earth leakage trip. An half decent repairer should be able to diagnose the fault within 5 minutes, if he's any good. So it may be wiser to get a quote for a diagnostic check on the fault. I hope this helps you a little bit.
I had a similar problem.Try tightening the belt they work slack after a while.
