all you need to do is sprinkle some baking soda, the kind you use to keep your ice box smelling nice all over them. this will eliminate any smell and help keep your feet dry..
alcohol.
saltwater over night
put them the sink with 1/2 cup of borax or baking soda.. let them soak for 30 minutes, rinse.. it should be a lot better.
Vinegar and water
Put some baking soda in a bucket of hot water and leave the flip-flops in them overnight. They should be odorless by morning.
If they are the cheaper kind, they probably have parts that are glued together. If you soak them in most anything, they will fall apart. You might just have to lighty spray them with a deodorizer and let them air outside. It might take a few times.
well i've heard baking soda is good for tennis shoes, so it might work on flip flops too.
I used to wear Teva Sandals while working in the Persian Gulf and believe me, they stunk. I identified the problem as bacterial and/or fungal growth on the surface and in the microscopic pores of what is essentially dense foam rubber.
I would undergo the following ritual and always achieve fresh-smelling sandals until a few weeks later when it would regrow.
1) Scrub with dish soap and water.
2) Soak overnight in the soapy water, or in vinegar water, and then and scrub again in the morning.
3) Dust them in baking soda and let dry in the hot sun all day.
4) repeat the scrubbing.
5) For added protection, soak in saltwater and let dry in the sun again. The salt deposited in the pores will inhibit growth for a while.
Basically this is a synergistic combination of all of the above ideas, and I can attest to its efficacy. You want to remove all of the smut you can, soak out/draw out more smut, scrub that away, and then disinfect and protect. Good luck.
If you shower in them the let them air dry, they will be fine...
