Wot sort of thing/mould can eat through plastic?

Question:ok i know this sounds gross, I cleaned all the window frames the other day, (pvc) and in my daughter's room there was a lump of stuff in the corner (I'm thinking maybe she put some food or something there but i don't know) anyway I scraped it away and whatever it was had "ate" a really big hole, quite deep into the pvc. what sort of thing could do this?! it;s really freaked me out!

Answers:
You don't say what colour the lump of stuff was. It is most likely to be glue or something containing solvent which has melted the surface underneath. Alternatively, if it was dark in colour maybe your daughter has been burning something (smoking materials perhaps?) and this has fallen or dripped onto the windowsill and melted into the pvc. That would leave a hole when you dug it out. The cause is certainly human, not animal or fungal!

rat
Rat, raccoon, goat, chipmunk, beaver, birds, vultures, guinea pig, etc.
It's more likely to be a straightforward chemical reaction than a biological agent. PVC is said not to be biodegradable.

Did you save any of the substance? If it does turn out that a micro-organism has evolved to eat PVC or other normal plastics, it is both hopeful and rather frightening - if it nibbled away the insulation in your wiring you could be in for a nasty shock

So I hope you preserved it for analysis.
