I want to buy a small and hopefully cheap vacuum for my apartment. Any suggestions?
Question:My larger upright has lost its sucking power and I need a new vacuum. Being a college student however, I don't have much money laying around for a new vacuum. I'm looking at max $75 or so. At the same time I want something that will take care of the shag carpeting in my apartment. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I bought a stick vacuum at Walmart for about $25. It is essentially a dustbuster with a long handle. But is does have rotating brushes to do carpets.
I bought it because I was tired of lugging that heavy upright around. And it does decent job!
Now which is better - Vacuuming once a week and doing an OK job or vacuuming once a month and doing a great job?
Once a week with that light vacuum is my choice!

Eureka The Boss Bagless is the one I have.
Reviews on Bisell are quite good. We looked around and found a good Bisell at WalMart and Lowes for about $40-someodd. It has all the tools attached, and a hose that attaches/detaches easily. The bagless system is easy to clean, and the filters are easy to reach too. It does a good job keeping up with 2 small children (and their friends) as well as the pets. Suction is good, and it works very well on both carpet and bare floors. It's not as wide as the Hoover versions, but it fits into more spaces because of that.
you might find one on sale for around that but usually they run $100-$150.NEVER buy a used one..then youre just buying someone elses headache.vacuums are disposable appliances as it is
I have been through every kind of vacuum and the cheap ones (anything less than $200) is pretty much a waste of money. The best thing I did was find a second hand vacuum store in my city. They rebuild and repair old/used vacuums and every vacuum costs $20-$25. I bought a Eureka bagless that works great...better than my $150 black and decker. Try to find a shop like this in your area. Sometimes second hand appliance shops will sell them.
I bought a Swivel Sweeper last month upon my daughter's recommendation. We have a heavy duty vacuum cleaner, but I have a pinched nerve in my back and can't lug that thing around. Anyway, you would be amazed at how well the Swivel Sweeper works! I can do my whole house in about 10 minutes. It has a rechargeable pack that you can plug into the wall to recharge, then plug it into the device. It has a little container on the bottom that collects all the dirt. It is the lightest, easiest thing to use. It gets under everything and around everything. We are going to get our college daughter one for her dorm room next year. It actually comes in a small box about the size of a large textbook. Look for it in the kitchen aisle at Target, for about $35. It is not as good for heavy duty vacuuming as a giant vacuum cleaner, but you would be shocked at how much it picks up and like I said, it works great! Hope this helps you some.
Not for 75.00, you get what you pay for.Canisters have less complications with them and last many many years longer...but they do cost more, they are awesome with shag.
Wal-mart has a bissel upright for under 50.00 (38.94 here)...but I hear they dont last to long...
I would suggest going with a smaller kenmore or the dirt devil feather light. I would also say the Dyson SIim is the best you could get but they retail for around $500. Stay away from the Eureka Boss Smart Vac they are returned quite frequently.
