soap scum is the residue of soap and skin that is left in the sink or bathtub.
soap residue mix soap with dirt and water and shazam! soap scum. if it's a problem try soft water soaps if you think that's something try understanding the difference between soft water and hard water they make the soaps for dishwashers and laundry washers and evening cars
I totally agree with the first answer that is why I always rinse my bathtub/shower down and wipe dry. Also water can build up too like soap scum that is why I wipe dry my bathtub/shower.
Chemically speaking, soaps are salts of fatty acids. The sodium salts of fatty acids are water soluble and they are what you get when you buy a bar of soap. The calcium and magnesium salts of fatty acids are not water soluble. Both calcium and magnesium are present in most tap water, so when you take a shower or wash your hands some of the soap is going to combine with the calcium and magnesium in the water. Since the resulting soap is no longer water soluble it is going to collect on any surface that is available and it is going to stay there. The result is a layer of soap scum.
