What top-loading US washing machine filters lint best?

Question:I used to own a GE "filter flo" machine which had a removable filter attached to the top of the agitator and water flowed though it from a spout on the side of the machine. It was the best machine ever for removing lint. GE changed their design in 1996, eliminating this filter on the machine. I currently own a newer Hotpoint (also a GE brand) without any lint filtration in the washing machine whatsoever. I never had lint "balls" on my clothes with the GE machine, but I have them with the Hotpoint, even when they run though the dryer.

So what is the best-filtering washing machine, or should I just rebuild an old filter-flo?
