How do I clean a really dirty oven?

Question:Im a veggie so dont use the oven much but my housemates grill and cook a lot of fatty meat in there and the oven has just gotten so dirty.

Its electric and fairly old. There is thick browny black grease lining the whole thing and burnt on bits over most places. While I was away my housemates also put salt at the bottom to stop the smoke that was created from the burning fat. This appears to have solidified at the bottom, making the problem worse.

Im a poor student and cant really afford professionals. Any ideas?

Try Easy Off Oven Cleaner. Just follow directions on can. Can be found in most grocery stores. Works great with less scrubbing. Happy Cleaning!

throw it and get a new one
You scrub it! hahahah happy scrubbing. Actually go to the store and buy some chemicals for it. I know some really good ones but forgot the names sorry, all i know is its in a yellow can. Happy scrubbing
Heyy i use washing up liquid!! it works great at removing grease and use a scouring pad! fill a sink full of hot water prefably boil the kettle and pour some washing up liquid in and scrub it all over and leave it on for about 10mins, change your water and using a cloth soak in water then wipe away all all excess bubbles and grime!! i find sprays the antibacterial ones the best they are about 99p and u can use them to go over the oven door the buttons(knobs) to remove germs!
i hope this works!
And tell them to clean it more often its not just ur job!!

Dawn power dissolver let sit for awhile wipe away if it's that dirty you may have to do it twice and use a steel wool pad. It's going to be pretty messy. make them clean it up it shouldn't be your problem
Fairy power spray is really good, and not too expensive. Another good tip is a steam cleaner. See if you can borrow or hire one. This also works a treat on the bathroom, and it's quick and easy, without any chemicals (just watch you don't burn yourself!) I hate cleaning the oven :(
try using boiling hot water with some washing machine powder u could use a solid bristle brush work around the bottem to the top turn power off at power box for the oven only just in case ,although it shouldint matter pour boiling hot water not all of it just to soften up the crap then sprinkle the powder on it get scrubing broom and scrub you can use paper towels to clean the excess this would be a cheap and effective way to clean it since im a cheap as myself it's worked for me before i don't use oven cleaner in a can coz it's really toxic and i mean really toxic i think it's costic soda i can't belive they sell it on the shelf
when I couldn't afford to buy the cleaners and before we had a self cleaning oven i did the following.
place an oven proof pan in the oven with water in it. heat the oven to 350. turn off oven after 30 minutes. make sure the water hasn't totally evaporated. Wipe out what loosed from this process. If still disgusting- redo. then if still caked on, place a glass (one you will never use again for food) with a cup of ammonia water - sold in stores as sudsy ammonia etc Parsons etc. Open a window. and let this sit over night- you should be able to wipe it clean in the morning. Just be very sure you have good ventilation- you may want to do this while you are at work and then come home and wipe out. Also if you can afford a bottle of Simple Green- you can spray that on and wipe and keep repeating that process. Letting it dissolve the grease for about an hour.
I am a vegan also - the oven still gets dirty but it takes a year!
Start by wiping out with ordinary detergent and lots of water, it may help to turn the oven on for a minute or two before you start to warm things up a bit (turn off before you put any water in of course). You may as well get the loose stuff out first.

Then spray on oven cleaner is the best. Alternately the ammonia in the oven already mentioned isn't a bad idea but the spray on stuff works better. It's highly alkaline, so wear rubber gloves.

Another thing is washing soda solution, pretty strong. Washing soda is cheap and very alkaline. Actually any alkaline cleaner will do some good, even laundry detergent.

Get a cheap tin baking dish with a cover. This keeps roast meats moist and prevents much soiling of the oven.
First start by placing newspaper or an old vinyl shower curtain on the floor in front of the stove to catch any icky mess!! You don't want that greasy mess all over your floor when you are done cleaning the oven!! Easy Off is a spray oven cleaner that you can pick up at your local discount store or grocery store. Also, pick up a pair of rubber gloves so your skin is not exposed to the harmful chemicals in the cleaner!! Read directions on the can, I found the easiest way is to follow the overnight directions, then when you get up all you have to do is wipe it down, if it's still in need of cleaning, repeat the process until clean!!

Good luck!!
