I need a natural homemade dishwasher detergent?
Question:
Answers:
No you don't.
Dishwasher detergent is a complicated product. It contains abrasives, surficants, and strong chemicals to dissolve food residue. It cleans and disinfects the dishes. Nothing you make at home will do the job.
Don't try using a dishwashing liquid like Dawn in the dishwasher. It foams up and will flood the kitchen.
If you simply want a more eco-friendly detergent for hand-washing dishes in the sink, ones made by Method or sold at Trader Joe's claim to be more "green." I can't imagine how you would make such a product at home, either.
1 cup Baking Soda
1 cup Borax
Mix thoroughly and store in a plastic container, use approximately 2 TBS per load.
Use vinegar in the rinse compartment as a rinse agent to help prevent residue.
Try adding 2-3 drops essential oil
------------------------------...
1 part baking soda
1 part borax
1 part water
1 drop lemon or orange essential oil per cup of detergent
Mix the ingredients thoroughly and store in a sealable jug.
Use 2 to 3 TBS per load.
Supposedly you can use the same homemade detergent in the dishwasher as you do for laundry. I have tried it and it works about as well as the cheap DW detergent, but not as well as name brands (Cascade, etc.). The recipe I use is simply equal parts washing soda (not baking soda) and borax.
i would go with what one for life said
Mix and use per dishwasher load:
1 Tablespoon Borax
1 Tablespoon Baking soda
OR
Mix equal parts Borax and Baking Soda, and add 2 Tablespoons per load. Increase proportion of soda for hard water. Use vinegar in the rinse cycle.
