Cif (jif) on leather works??
Question:ive just used some cif (jif in australia, no NOT the peanut butter) on an inconspicious part of my leather seats and it seems to have worked EXTREMLY well. all that was on the paper towel was dark brown dirt. is this good for it or will it be removing the natural oils?? too abrasive?? would it be ok if i used meguirs leather conditioner straight away?
any other cleaning products that will give my leather a deep down clean? baking soda, water, etc dont work
Answers:
I've used it on mine, sure its get the dirt out, but make sure you treat the leather with oils afterwards otherwise it will dry it out and cause cracks.
Jif is far too abrasive to use on leather furniture and is very likely to have removed the finish and possibly the pigment from your leather. Adding oils or 'conditioners' to this will only make matters worse and not better.
You cannot remove the natural oils from leather by cleaning. This is a complete myth built up from old leathers and perpetuauted to sell more products which are either not needed or at worst can actually damage the leather.
Meguirs leather conditioner will do nothing for your leather and if the finish did need replacing may make this impossible as it would not adhere to it.
To give a deep down clean you need to use products that have been produced and tested by a company that knows about leather repair and restoration. A foam leather cleaner is the best and safest to use as it will get down into the grain pattern and remove any dirt that has gathered there. If you follow with a leather protector that works (not a 'conditioner) this will inhibit the dirt and oils and make cleaning next time much easier.
The best thing to do now would be:
LTT Strong Cleaner - foam cleaner to give a really good clean
Leather Protect - this one really works and will safeguard against oils and dirt
Lazy Leather - 2 in one maintenance product that will help keep your leather in good condition.
Hope this helps
