How can reduce the heating power from my washing machine?

Question:My generator will run my washing machine on a cold wash, but a hot wash draws too much power. Can I add a resistor or something to the heating element to reduce the current used?

Answers:
I read somewhere that there is no need to wash clothes on a hot wash..washing them in cold water is fine and reduces your energy bill, so I wash all my clothes in cold water. Just use bleach with whites.
