I need some suggestions for cleaning a hardwood floor that has seen it's day...have to go with the cheapest...

i use murphy's oil soap. just mix with water liberally and mop. it will take several times before you see a difference, but ultimately its the best.
I would just use a normal wood floor cleaner and alot of wax afterward to make it look better till you can refinish floor or sell house.
To go the cheapest way I would clean with a small amount of dishwashing detg. and go over a couple times with just vinegar & water
The cheapest way is to distract the eye from the floor.
In other words rearrange existing furniture and put down some area rugs. That would be the cheapest as you would be using existing materials in your home.
Murphys oil does work but it also is alot of work.
Mop it with a mild detergent and water then buy a cheap sponge mop and put old english scratch cover on it and go over floor ....let it dry and then you can use pledge floor cleaner or murphys. It will cover scratches blend uneven spots and make it look like it was just stained again. It cost 5 bucks or so but will work wonders. I had bad floors and did this all the time. It will last a month or so until you have to repeat it.
PLEASE...NO OIL SOAP & NO OLD ENGLISH SCRATCH COVER...we are having a time with a big wood floor that used that old english, our client is so upset that the people before used that, it smears and leaves foot prints! Only if you want it to look dull, smeared and have no shine.
Also oil soap is great for somethings, hey it repels ants:)
Get a orange glo kit (wal-mart, target) has the mop and the cleaner and will last you several months and is cheap..it comes in a small box, you put the mop together, and has a removable pad that you can wash every time you mop your floor in the washer, not like regular mops where you are dragging the dirt from last cleaning on to the floors again...the orange glo cleaner in the green trigger spray is better than the orange glo cleaner/wax in the squeeze bottle. the mop also works great and fast on tile floors..any floors gets in the spaces Good even though it is flat...I would get a separate pad for regular floors than the one you would use for the wood floors...we use this in the model homes to make floors look there best:) I have my own cleaning company, office, home, new construction and models:)
I cleaned military housing when the families moved out and I have wood floors today in my house. I have used merphy's oil soap for more than six years and it hasn't let me down.
buy Murphy's oil soap. this stuff works great on hardwood floors and the floors look beautiful! Just follow the directions. And the best part , it's cheap. you can buy it at any supermarket .
