My son drew a picture with Sharpies on a cotton t-shirt. How can I wash it and preserve the drawing?

Question:He got some water on it and said it began to smear.

Answers:
IF IT WAS A TRUE SHARPIE IT SHOULDNT SMEAR, BUT YOU CAN SET IT IN HOT WATER, THEN WASH IN COLD

Soak it in vinegar for awhile before washing it for the first time. My Mom used to do that with the t-shirts I had signed by my friends at summer camp. Just be sure to use white vinegar.
Hand-wash it, for one, and make sure it was real permanent marker.. it shouldn't smear. I personally went to a camp a while ago and had all of my counselors sign my shirt in sharpie, and with washing it in the washing machine it stayed for a few months, but I wore it almost every other night for sleeping. So, it also depends how often you will be needing to wash it... I'm sure washing it once won't do much damage.
First check the pen and see if he did use a sharpie . It should not smear.Wash in cold water inside out, hang on a hanger to dry,
