I don't want my 100% cotton shirt to shrink OR fade. Whats the best route?
Question:I've heard that hot water makes clothes shrink and fade, but but I've also heard that cold water makes clothes fade because the soap does not completely come out. Which is true? And what is the best way to wash my shirt if I don't want it to fade OR shrink?
Answers:
cold wash. cold rinse... if it has print... turn the shirt inside out... Line dry... or very very low heat. it does work. I've not heard of the cold water soap thing. but hot water does shrink anything 100%...
Cold water washing with a good powder like persil is best. You don't say what colour? Most shirts fade these days after several washings. If you didn't want that to happen, then dry cleaning would be the better option. But that is more expensive.
Washing in cold water with a cold water powder shouldn't fade your clothes. Drying your clothes in full sun and regular wear and tear does.
The best way to look after cotton is to wash in cold water and air dry in the shade.
Your shirt should have care instructions on the tag. It will give you a better idea as some items are handwash etc.
The best way I know my son has plenty cotton shirts, off all colors. Turn your shirts inside out, when washing them , wash them on a 30ºc machine wash , or on a cold wash cycle. The reason they fade is, if you hang them outside in the sun the sun will bleach the color out, this is why it´s best to wash them turned inside out, If you have white T-shirt / shirts then leave them as they are , like this the sun will bleach them whiter than white. Hope this helps you a little
Cold water ,line dry or if you can afford it, take it to rhe cleaners
Wash it in cold water and defintely DO NOT put it in the dryer. Yes ur right the hot water will fade it and shrink it and the dryer will defintely shrink it 5 times smaller. Cold water has never faded any of my clothes. Hope this helps and good luck.
Before washing, soak your shirt in cold water along with white vinegar. This will set the color. Wash it by itself in cold/cold and dry on low setting. You will have to expect some shrinkage just do to cotton getting wet and then drying. My mother taught me this when i was 7. Has worked for me ever since we did our American Flag. Good Luck.
