I have a shirt that is 85% cotton & 15% cashmere. what would happen if i machine washed it?
Question:the tag says dry clean only, but is that really neccessary?

It's probably best to follow the tag, but in a pinch I think you could hand wash in cold water and dry it on a towel.
Cashmere, the best way to clean it to hand wash it.and lay flat to dry...the machine will shrink it, the agitation of the cycle causes fibers to shortened in things like cashmere and wool and hence shrink...dry cleaning works but he cashmere may not look as nice, might be the easiest way, especially if you have a dry cleaner you trust.
