How can I take care of wooden walls in my bathroom?

Question:I just recently moved into a wonderful little house. However, the walls in and around the bathtub/shower are wood and just painted over. I spoke to the people I'm renting from, and asked how they used to clean it. She said that whenever they saw mold or mildew, they just painted over it.

Now on top of toxic mold issues, I'm wondering what I need to do to keep the shower clean. What products can I use, or is it pretty much useless at this point?

Answers:
To be honest, I would strip all the paint off, then use a mildicide/fungicide on the wood, then apply a heavy under-coat of KILZ (an anti-mold paint), and finally paint it with a durable/scrubbable latex paint. There may be a better solution. Check with your local hardware store for more options.

Wood is a completely unsatisfactory material for a shower. Only removing it will end a continuous headache of maintenance.
Clean them and put on a coat or two of polyurethane
Anything with bleach in it will kill the mold and remove the discoloration. If you decide to paint again use a few coats of KILLS it will stop the mold from growing back. If you are renting the landlord is responsible to make sure there is no health issue. You can file a complaint against him if he doesn't comply in a timely fashion.
dont bother doing any other remodeling short of getting rid of the wood and install tile or marble

if you cant do that, wipe the painted wood down with bleach, rinse well, paint over with kilz.

anything in between those two are a huge waste of time i think.

wood in a shower is not charming or vintage, its just plain dumb.
