First COLD WATER! Try rubbing some soap into the stain, (Tide is pretty good, but sometimes a strong hand soap can take care of it too.) If the stain is old, you may be out of luck. Wash the garment in cold water. If you're really stuck, I recommend the Spray 'n Wash stick. It really is good.

Wash by hand, first put it in COLD WATER, then add tide and rub many times until stain is gone. Then wash soap off with cold water. Finally you may wash it with the other clothes.
Recently my son got blood on his shirt which set in and after several washes I used SHOUT action gel advanced, formulated for set in stains. That stuff really works! The blood came out no problem and it worked fantastic on grease stains, ring around the collar, food stains.. literally saving clothes from being thrown out.
Straight Peroxide works great! I use peroxide on all kinds of stains, and it works on blood too. ;)
