How do you get 'old lady smell' out of balls of wool?

Question:I recently brought a bag of wool from a second hand store but it has an old musty odour, what is the best way to get rid of it? It is synthetic, and has a 'fuzzy' finish to it, like cheap mohair (ie, will tangle easily) and is about 8ply. I have about 10 balls. I had thought of just waiting until I had made it up (no project in mind as yet) and then washing it, but would like to know if there is a better way.
All ideas appreciated.

Sometime the best way to get rid of odours in wool and garments is to put them outside in the frost but unfortuneately its summer so that can't be done but maybe you can try putting them in the freezer? Or perhaps putting them in a paper bag with fleecy sheets for the dryer. Good luck.

I would get a bag of poparea(?) or a heavy scented candle..Put it in the bag with the yarn for afew days..Just punch holes in the sented bag to keep it from getting on the yarn,,,
Put them in a plastic bag with a box of baking soda with holes punched in the box and store it that way, maybe it will absorb the odor. I wouldn't make anything with it till ya get the old lady smell out, as if the smell never comes out, no one will want to use the item you made.
Otherwise, throw it away, cause you don't know what made the old lady smell, maybe someones cat peed on it and that's why they got rid of the wool.
