try cleaning under the top rim of your washing machine..sludge collects there and you always notice the smell more in towels.also put in a load of towels with 2 cups vinegar and let them go through a whole cycle then repeat with soap,this will remove the smell and is also good for the washing machine
If what you are describing as "funk smell" is musty and mildew odor, then wash the towels with detergent and then rinse well. Dry in the dryer until fully dry, with or without fabric softener, that's your call. I always use fabric softener sheets and they come out fluffy and smell good too!!

Try a little bleach in the water, works for me.
Clean your towels separately from other laundry and add some Baking Soda into the machine. This helps take out the odor from the fabric. Don't use fabric softeners, because they cause the fabric to wear quicker and make the towels less absorbent.
Add 1/4-1/2 cup vinegar in the wash next time you wash them on the hot setting.
Honestly , 2 caps of pine sol will remove odors..but do not mix it with bleach.just the laundry detergent and two caps of pine sol..also make sure you dry the towels completely and use fabric softener
Tide, Wisk, Arm and Hammer. Don't use anything cheap. I bought some cheap laundry detergent that left all my clothes smelling funky I had to re-wash them in a name brand. Out of my top 3 I would chose arm and hammer to get the funky oder out since it has baking soda in it. Oh and another note, I'm part of a yahoo cleaning help group and I've heard several ladies say that some towels they purchased had funky odors when they tried to wash them..something about the fabric. You may check around and see if anybody else has that problem.
Tide, bleach and hot water. Use Downey in the rinse cycle. If that doesn't work, make the towels into rags and buy new ones.
