If the dirt is still dry, a VERY VERY strong vacuum cleaner will get it up. Other than that, white distilled vinegar cleans things pretty well. and then vacuum it up lol
Sounds like you need to rent a carpet cleaner and clean the whole house or room....
anything you use to clean with will leave a nice clean spot on your rug.
You need to post what the stain is for better advice.
I agree with the first answer totally clean the whole carpet.
