I think you are referring to unbleached duck, it's a heavy fabric kind of like what blue jeans are made from only more durable. Either that or muslin, a plain weave unbleached cotton fabric that comes in varying weights. You can purchase either relatively inexpensive sold by the yard at any fabric store.
