Is bleach harmful to your health?

Question:I am trying to use all natural cleaning solutions in my house, but I need a disinfectant for the kitchen. I was wondering if bleach is as harmful as other commercial cleaners. If so what is a good natural disinfectant.

Answers:
Well, yes it could be. Try not to inhale, or have contact with eyes or prolonged contact with skin. BUT, you have to love it's cleaning abilities!

I have heard good things about the brand Green, but really think Lysol or Bleach for the really grimy places

No I use it for lots of everyday cleaning. Just dont get too much on your skin. Use it with gloves will make a nice smell and clean good.
It's a great disinfectant, but it is not for human infestion. It's poison.
Yeah, very harmful. Its an oxidizing agent, so skin and lung irritation (and damage in the long run) is a guarantee.

Avoid inhalation and direct contact as much as you can. I dont want to sound like a freak, but if you wear gloves and a mask, you should be able to get the benefits without any harmful effects.

you can get the mask at any pharmacy or hardware store.
Bleach is pretty harsh and can be dangerous. It is corrosive to your fixtures, can generate toxic fumes if mixed with other stuff or used in a poorly ventilated area. I am a hospital medical lab tech. We use mainly quaternary ammonium compounds to kill most germs. That is what you will find in many spray on kitchen cleansers. But when we use bleach a 10% solution is used. Anything stronger is not necessary. In most cases for home use hot water and soap on a clean rag does the job. But if you feel you need extra cleaning use the 10% bleach and water solution (1part bleach to 9 parts water)
let dry, but do not use of faucets or other metal surfaces.
I use a mixture of rubbing alcohol and vinegar. The vinegar cuts threw grease and the alcohol disinfects. The trick is the alcohol has to dry first to disinfect then you wipe. Bleach burns my nose and chest and hands.
As an alternative, try ammonia. It doesn't have to whitening properties of chlorine bleach, but ammonia is very good for this disinfecting. It is also an excellent degreaser (makes cleaning your stove-top a snap!). I like to pour some in the laundry when I wash clothes. It cuts grease, disinfects, helps eliminate smells, and is really good at helping get rid of underarm stains on shirts caused by sweat and antiperspirant deodorant. Try it - you'll like it!
