How to get musty smell out of old book?
Question:I recently got some books out of my storage room and a lot of them smelled musty due to some moisture. Is there any easy way to get the smell out. I tried sitting outside for a few days to air out, but not much help.
Answers:
I read that you can sprinkle baby powder into the pages and it will remove the odor. . .
Put them in a box with an onion cut in half.
spray it with lysol
My first thought was to put it in the sun to air out.
i like to put smelly books in a wooden box with a peice of fabric with my favorite essence oil (couple drops) on it.
Sprinkle baby powder and baking soda on the bottom of a clean box. Place a single sheet of paper towels over the mixture. Open each book and put the uncovered box in an area near fresh air like a window on a day with low humidity.
Don't air the books in the sunlight because the sun can damage the paper pages. It's never a good idea to spray anything directly on the books.
For books that are not priceless, you can pack a scented dryer pad in a clean box with the books. The biggest storage problems with books are direct sun, high humidity, hot temperatures, glue worms that stain or mark the pages and bindings. Attics and basements are not good choices for book storage.
