Lettuce that got too much water when growing often has little brown freckles on the inside of the core--ok to eat just looks strange.

Means it's been around too long and is starting to rot. But it's still edible, so long as it's not slimey. Also, cutting lettuce with a metal knife will cause it to brown quickly. They used to make special plastic knives to cut lettuce. Best is to whack the head on the counter to remove the core, then tear it up with your hands. If you mix letuce with any other vegetables, don't try to keep it until the next day, that causes it to brown too.
