This is strictly a matter of preference. Any of the nationally advertised brands will work well, however they are usually harsh when it comes to fading regardless of what they say in their advertising.
You should use detergents made with plant based ingredients if you are washing gentle clothes like dress shirts and lingerie
I like Method laundry detergent (sold only at Target, they have an exclusive distribution deal with them)
For gentle fabrics I use Arm and Hammers new plant based detergent

Gain liquid!! It smells best also!!
I personally like the way tide works on my clothes, it brightens the whites and smells great.
Tide...a bit more expensive then cheapo brands, I use Purex, it works the same I think and a little less expensive.
But Tide is the only think that got make up out of the carpet and off the walls and out of hair, etc when my 5 yr old cousin made a big mess of it.
Surf works well and is cheaper than a lot of other detergents. It smells great too!
